Glendale Opens Three Heat Relief Respite Centers
City receives $771,000 from Maricopa County to assist in operating these centers
The city of Glendale has opened three heat relief centers, which are expected to serve up to 90 individuals per day between now through September. The goal for these centers is to provide a safe place for the unsheltered population and their pets to rest and receive essential nutrition and hydration and to reduce the amount of heat-related deaths in the unsheltered population.
“This program is an example of a powerful partnership between Maricopa County, the city of Glendale, the Arizona Faith Network and Phoenix Rescue Mission,” said Glendale’s Community Services Director Jean Moreno. “Each partner contributes its resources and expertise to maximize impactful services that support vulnerable members of our community in ways we could not do alone.”
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved $771,000 in funding earlier this year for the city of Glendale to use towards heat relief for people experiencing homelessness. The funds received established the three new heat relief respite centers, fund more outreach programs and allow for transportation to the heat relief centers.
“It is critical that we take care of our most vulnerable populations during the hot summer months,” said Glendale Mayor Jerry P. Weiers. “This funding will allow us to expand our reach and ensure more people are kept safe.”
The three Glendale centers are located at Larkspur Church at 10614 N. 43rd Ave., at the Glendale Mission & Ministry Center located at 6242 N. 59th Ave. and at St. John’s Lutheran Church located at 7205 N. 51st Ave. The Glendale Mission & Ministry Center is open Monday through Saturday from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. St. John’s Lutheran Church operates from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Larkspur Church is open from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. On Wednesday it is open from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m.
