Vehicle Charging New Buzz in Glendale
City’s New Master Planned Community Equips All Garages with an Electric Vehicle Outlet
Residents made their voices heard in a 2018 vote, and the city of Glendale listened, jumping into action by adopting several sustainability goals as part of the 2040 General Plan. One of these goals is to improve environmental sustainability. Since the vote, Glendale has committed to add 19 electric vehicles to the city fleet and several electric vehicle charging stations near City Hall, but it isn’t just these commitments that have the City moving into a new era. Through partnerships with SRP, Taylor Morrison, Lennar Corporation and Pulte Homes, a new community in Glendale will soon see the impact of that 2018 vote.
The new StoneHaven community in southwest Glendale is a master-planned community that will feature homes with at least one 240-volt Level 2 charging outlet in the garage for fast electric vehicle charging. These outlets are part of the standard garage package for homes in the community of more than 1,200 new houses once it reaches full buildout.

StoneHaven is part of SRP’s ENERGY STAR Homes program which now offers an incentive to homebuilders to make communities “EV ready.” Homebuilders can receive $300 from SRP for each ENERGY STAR home that is pre-wired for Level 2 electric vehicle charging. This applies to communities that are part of SRP’s service territory and Glendale is the first city in Arizona to request that these outlets be installed in every garage of new master-planned communities to accommodate quicker electric vehicle charging. Level 2 wiring supports the most advanced charging technology now available, including smart chargers and Amazon Alexa-enabled charging.

“Pre-wiring homes for EV charging capabilities adds value for all individuals involved,” said Rebecca Smout, SRP Program Manager. “This includes homebuilders who will soon be required to install this wiring, and homeowners who now have the option to charge EV’s without putting in expensive infrastructure themselves. Homeowners will also see increased resale values as EV charging will soon be an expectation of homebuyers in the Valley area moving forward.”
