Glendale Breaks Ground On Latest Heroes Regional Park Upgrades
Pickleball, dog park, synthetic turf lighted field on tap for residents’ play
Residents and visitors will be able to play pickleball, engage their furry friends in outdoor exercise and enjoy many field sports, along with other fun activities, when the next phase in the Glendale Heroes Regional Park development is completed, a milestone celebrated during a groundbreaking ceremony earlier today.
Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers, City Councilmember Joyce Clark, along with city Parks and Recreation Department staff members, Dig Studio, Willmeng Construction officials and residents gathered with shovels in hand to mark this exciting occasion at the park at the northeast corner of Bethany Home Road and 83rd Avenue. The enhancements will offer more recreational opportunities on about 40 acres of the park, which opened prior to 2008 and encompasses about 81 acres altogether.
“Today’s groundbreaking is an exciting time to mark the addition of great, recreational amenities here in the City of Glendale,” Weiers said. “The multi-use fields will add to the beautiful greenspace and allow us to accommodate residents and visitors in this rapidly growing area of the city as they enjoy memorable experiences with their loved ones.”
The upgrades will feature the City of Glendale’s first synthetic turf, multi-use field, as well as two natural grass, multi-use fields, each of which will be lighted. In addition, the city is adding eight pickleball courts, a connection to the Heroes Regional Park Library, several ramadas, a dog park, lighted mini-pitch, a creative and adventurous play space and additional parking spots. This latest phase in the park project symbolizes the culmination of many years’ worth of extensive planning among the Glendale City Council and city staff. Residents and visitors are already reaping the benefits of the park’s urban fishing lake, its X-Court, a 26,000-square-foot, concrete multi-use facility for skaters and bikers; along with a splash pad, archery range, basketball courts and ramadas.
“This park, and the latest planned stretch of its development, have long been a goal of mine as a way to give back to citizens who value recreation,” Clark said. “Residents love coming here to fish in Heroes Park Lake and to bring their families and friends for picnics, to cool off in the splash pad and to play volleyball and basketball.
