Hiring an Off-Duty Glendale Police Officer
Glendale Police Officers can be hired by the public to perform security and traffic control services. All Off-Duty jobs are coordinated with the Glendale PD Off Duty Coordinator.
Common Off-Duty officer requests are:
- Traffic control at construction sites
- Security for various businesses or events
- Security for retail, shopping malls, food establishments
- Security and traffic control for school functions
- Security and traffic control for churches
- Security for bars and entertainment venues
Prohibited Off-Duty Employment*:
- Any employment that constitutes a threat to the status or dignity of the police as a professional occupation such as employment at establishments that sell pornographic materials or items of a sexual nature to include establishments that provide services of a sexual nature
- Any employment or business interest in private investigative work or investigative work for an insurance company or attorney
- Process server, bill collector, repossessing property, towing companies, labor disputes or other similar employment in which police authority might be used
- Funerals, private functions, marijuana dispensary, private estate sales
- Weddings, private parties/banquets except at churches, on church property or at the Glendale Civic Center
- Officers are not permitted to work where they perform non-police tasks
- Officers may not work outside of the Glendale city limits unless it is for traffic control
- Officers are not permitted to work where adequate officers are not hired to handle the situation safely

* The holiday rate will apply to the following days: New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, MLK Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Easter, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Day before Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving day, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day
** Emergency rate applies when a request is received less than 24 hours prior to the start of the shift
Important Information
- Those wishing to hire Off-Duty Officers must sign and submit the Off-Duty Work Agreement prior to the request being staffed
- For new employers/brokers wishing to hire Off-Duty GPD officers, a minimum of two weeks’ notice is required due to administrative processing times
- For established employers/brokers with active off-duty work agreements in place:
- Two working days is requested for the hiring of an officer. Requests with less than 24-hour notice will be considered a late request, and an additional fee may be assessed.
- 3 hours minimum per request
- 4 officers or more requires 1 supervisor (i.e., 3 officers, 1 sergeant)
- Off-Duty GPD officers must be in full uniform. No “plain clothes” request will be granted
- A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required for off-duty job cancellation. A three (3) hour charge per employee will be levied in the event of a cancellation without the 24-hour notice
- Certificate of Insurance (minimum of $1,000,000 of liability and workman’s comp naming the City of Glendale as additionally insured) must be filed with the GPD Off-Duty Employment Coordinator prior to commencement of any staffing under this agreement
- Payment is due at the time of the assignment or no later than a maximum of 14 days of the assignment
- Due to a high number of requests, we may not be able to fulfill all off-duty jobs
