Glendale Mayor Jerry P. Weiers is hosting his 4th Annual Mayor’s Blood Drive at a time when the need is the highest. The blood drive will be held this Thursday, January 13, 2022 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Glendale Civic Center Annex Building Diamond Room. The all-day event will allow ample time for individuals with varied schedules to donate.

Mayor Weiers, along with the Glendale Chamber of Commerce and the City of Glendale’s Employee Wellness Committee, is partnering with Vitalant to help during this national blood shortage. During the month of December, collections were 4,500 units of blood below patient needs for hospitals. Vitalant, which services about 900 hospitals across 28 states, including 62 in Arizona, is currently experiencing a historic, two-year low blood supply.

“This year, the goal for the drive is to have 140 people to help save the lives of accident and trauma victims, cancer patients, and burn and shock patients at local hospitals, and I believe we can exceed that,” said Mayor Weiers.

Arizona’s blood supply continues to feel the impact of the pandemic. According to Vitalant, thousands of blood drives cancelled over the past 18 months due to school and business closures, and with many organizations still working virtually, Arizona blood drives remain 33% below pre-pandemic levels. Safety protocols will be in place at the blood drive, including mask requirements and sanitizing high touch areas.

As a thank you, all donors will receive a voucher for a free ticket to the Renaissance Festival and a free pint of frozen custard from Culver's. In addition, every donor will also be entered into a drawing for numerous raffle prizes.

If you were told previously that you were disqualified from donating blood, you might be able to now. Check the “Eligibility Requirements” page on the Vitalant website: vitalant.org/eligibility/additional-eligibility-requirements.

Mayor Weiers added, “I encourage everyone to come out and donate to help those in need. Your donation really can make a difference in saving lives.”

Blood drive participation is open to anyone at least 16 years old (minors must provide guardian signed permission form) and registrations are strongly recommended. Participants can register online at donors.vitalant.org with the Blood Drive Code “Weiers.” Registration allows participants to complete some of the necessary forms prior to their scheduled appointment, as well as reduce their wait time.

Interested donors with questions can contact Vitalant representative Katrina Eaton by phone at 602-770-4675 or by email at keaton@vitalant.org.
