Heat Relief Network

As temperatures climb, the city offers ways for the public to remain cool

The city of Glendale is proud to continue its partnership with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) to support and launch the Heat Relief Network.

The Heat Relief Network is a regional partnership of the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), municipalities, nonprofit organizations, the faith-based community, and businesses. providing hydration stations, refuge locations and water donation sites throughout the Valley. Heat Relief Network launched in 2005 after a weeklong heat wave causing about 30 deaths in the homeless population.



The city operates ten heat relief sites. In the summer of 2022, over 13,000 total bottles of water were distributed at Glendale locations.


Heat Relief Cooling Stations: 
Cooled indoor locations that provide refuge from the heat during the day. Drinking fountains or bottles water are available.

Heat Relief Rides:

When the rains aren’t helping cool us off, a reminder that 2-1-1 and APS have partnered to offer Lyft rides to cooling centers and heat relief stations across the valley. These services can be particularly important for our unsheltered community and for no-car households. 


There is also an Emergency Heat Relief Station at the Salvation Army Glendale Corps, located at 6010 W. Northern Avenue. Additional sites throughout the county can be found on the Heat Relief Network (azmag.gov); provided by MAG.

The Heat Relief Network (HRN) operates Monday, May 1 and lasts through September 30 of this year (2023). HRN provides these tips to avoid heat-related illness or death:

  1. Increase fluid intake and stay hydrated

  2. Limit exercise and outdoor activity between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

  3. When outside, be sure to properly dress for the extreme heat and wear sunscreen; with a minimum of SPF 15

  4. Rest frequently in cool/shady areas

  5. Never leave any persons or pets inside a parked vehicle

  6. Check on elderly neighbors and/or family members

The city of Glendale also offers several additional excessive heat-related programs, which include a Glendale emergency home repair program and utility assistance. Utility assistance is offered through the CAP office for qualifying residents. The emergency home repair program helps low-to-moderate income households in need of repairs such as an AC unit or evaporative cooler repair. The city partners with Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona to offer this program.
