Monsoon Season is Officially Here!
Posted on 06/16/2020

June 15, 2020 was named the official start of the monsoon season so with that Glendale Firefighters want to remind residents of ways to stay safe and prepared. When a monsoon strikes it is usually without a lot of warning. As valley residents we know how fast and furiously they can move into the valley, bringing strong winds, dust, rain and flash flooding.

These storms can cause interruptions in services such as water, power and gas. The most important thing that families can do to stay safe during a monsoon is to be prepared.

Here are some tips:

  • Have flashlights with extra batteries on hand.
  • Be sure to have food that can be prepared without the need for cooking or refrigeration.
  • Have at least one gallons of clean water for each person in the household.
  • Have backup power for anyone requiring power for a medical device.
  • Have backup power for cell phones that do not require charging.
  • Have a first aid kit ready and accessible.
  • Never drive into areas with flowing water, it takes less than 10 inches to wash a car away.
  • Avoid flooded areas such as washes.
  • If waters are rising seek higher ground.
  • Always report downed power lines by calling 9-1-1.
  • Keep pets indoors during storms.
